Conversations - life at deloitte

We asked some of our apprentices to tell us what sort of things they get involved with beyond their day-to-day role as part of their life at Deloitte. Here’s what they had to say.

There is a multitude of clubs and groups to get involved with at Deloitte and I have tried to get involved wherever I can. We also have lots of social get-togethers, although not in person now due to the pandemic, and these are always fun to attend.

Aside from these, I’m currently part of the wellbeing team in audit and represent the South West and Wales region.  We get to meet every week and discuss the wellbeing of our people in audit who are based around the UK, for example how we can keep morale high, even during busier periods where we’re all working at full capacity. This is something where I feel I am positively contributing to my team.  I really enjoy it.

Within my wider team, I’ve taken on a role to support early careers recruitment, which includes attending local schools, colleges and universities to reach out to potential future colleagues. This allows me to give something back to the firm. In addition, I have played in the office football team since I started at Deloitte. I play in goal, a position that is always sought after. I even travelled with the team to the Czech Republic to play in the Prague Cup, Deloitte’s inter-firm, international football tournament, which was a very good weekend.

I previously managed our Deloitte Bristol football team and went over to Prague for the firm’s international football tournament.  This is where Deloitte teams from across the world compete for the Prague Cup – it was a great experience! I’ve also been to countless social events which range from your standard night out to conquering my fear of heights at go-ape!!

There are a lot of opportunities to join Deloitte sports clubs, for example rounders is a lot of fun in the summer, as well as other networks internally and externally in the wider industry.

I also am part of a ‘women in corporate finance’ network where women from various firms get together for monthly drinks events. These networks are great for making friends too, especially since I moved to a new city to join Deloitte.

Since I joined in September, I’ve attended various virtual activities and events such as the Movember events, Christmas events, and also the Black Lives Matter events run by our Multicultural Network, which have all been insightful and enjoyable. I like activities where I get to interact with all my fellow apprentices and team members - they are all super nice and fun to be around!

I have facilitated multiple training sessions for more junior colleagues, as well as getting involved with the recruitment process. I’ve also thought about becoming a buddy or a coach for new joiners.

Josh 60x60Josh

I’m involved in the Deloitte buddy scheme. At the moment, I’m the buddy for two people who joined the firm in September.  I have helped them out with their induction process and we have weekly catch-up’s help with anything they’ve been struggling with. It’s a nice way to break up my working day!

I’ve just signed up for an exciting new volunteering opportunity to get involved with one of Business in the Community’s outreach programmes called ‘career conversations’.  In March I will be working with socially disadvantaged people, such as refugees, homeless individuals, young adults or similar, to help them with their CV writing and to improve their soft skills to increase their employability, something I am very passionate about.

I have been involved in various social and networking activities. For example, I was in the dodgeball team that competed in a charity event with other professional firms. I have also been in charge of organising my team’s virtual Christmas activities in 2020, which included a Deloitte’s Got Talent advent calendar, and our annual bake-off competitions.

In the past few years, I have focused on acting as an advocate for the Deloitte apprenticeship schemes, whether that be entry Level or BrightStart higher level, through attending college fairs and also speaking at conferences about my experience and the benefits of an apprenticeship.

Apprenticeship Week Wales celebrates apprenticeships and the value they bring to employers and learners across Wales.

#WPCYMRU #AWWALES #AskAnApprentice

Deloitte is a supporter of the campaign and, by sharing our stories, we would like to encourage everyone to consider how apprenticeships can help individuals to develop the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding career. We’re one of a number of employers celebrating the apprenticeship community, highlighting the opportunities to earn a wage and gain new skills and qualifications, and showcasing the resilience of apprentices and their employers during the pandemic.

Explore Deloitte’s virtual Spring careers festival, a programme of virtual events that potential applicants can join, as well as parents, teachers and careers advisors.  These range from discovery sessions, where people can chat online with our student recruitment team or current apprentices, skills workshops as well as ‘Meet Deloitte’ sessions.
