So, why Deloitte?

After spending 4 years in London studying Chemical Engineering, I knew I it wasn’t the right career path for me. I was born and brought up in Dubai and love being in the city, so Investment Banking or Consulting felt like a better fit. I talked it through with my mentor and Uncle,
Ashok Vaswani (CEO of Barclays Retail and Corporate Finance UK) and we found it came down to one thing - technology. Working at a company that had a passion for technology and would fully support my growth and development (I’d never worked in tech before) was what I decided I needed to look for. Deloitte ticked those boxes for me so I applied as soon as I could. I even flew from Dubai during the Easter holidays of my final year at university for an interview!

Can you tell us a bit more about your current role?

Over the past 6 years I have had the fortune to have been involved in implementing a number of exciting cloud technology projects. The best part of it is that I have learnt almost everything for the job, on the job! Effectively, I am an engineer who builds and accelerates technology platforms for organisations, enhancing their speed and quality of product delivery through the power of the Cloud and DevOps best practices. This implementation brings about rapid digital transformations allowing our clients to be industry leaders. The thing I love about my job is that I’m constantly learning new things day in and day out.

How have you grown since joining Deloitte?

The main thing that has really impressed me about Deloitte is that since joining back in 2015, I have been given the freedom and encouragement to explore my interests and develop my skills. Although my passion is technology, my IT knowledge was limited when I arrived. It’s amazing that I am now the Senior DevOps Engineer/Senior Consultant working in Cloud Infrastructure and Engineering. In addition to my IT skills, I have gained skills in communication, leadership and most importantly working as part of an efficient and supportive team.

Has Deloitte been supportive?

Deloitte supports and encourages everyone to discuss their mental wellbeing. This has been even more important during the pandemic. Throughout my 6 years with Deloitte, I don’t think that there has ever been a moment where I have felt alone and unsupported. I’ve been fortunate enough to have received mentoring and support from my team as well as from more experienced colleagues; Gurus as I like to think of them as!

Any hobbies?

I am a foodie! I live to eat, rather than eat to live so exploring new restaurants and giving my “self-proclaimed” culinary expertise a run for its money is most definitely at the top of my list. I also enjoy investing in my health and well-being, so I try to stay active and enjoy going to the gym (necessary given all the meals out!). I’ll admit I’ve been a bit more active recently due to making it on to Deloitte’s career page looking dapper!

My other passion is exploring scenic places and going on road trips. Being born in a city like Dubai surrounded by petrol heads has given me a lifelong passion for driving – I’m always up for long scenic road trips with good company.

What’s is the most exciting thing going on in your industry at the moment?

The great thing about being a DevOps Engineer is that it is industry agnostic. New opportunities are presenting themselves across locations, sectors and disciplines all the time. I believe that an exciting area in the coming years will be DataOps. Put simply, DataOps relies on a whole organisation to create and analyse data, improving the communication, integration and automation of information between organisations and clients/consumers.

Working in the DevOps and cloud computing field enables me to consider the possibilities for DataOps in the future, where every member off an organisation can contribute. With every digital trend, there will always be the need to have it all managed by technology infrastructure and processes that are well integrated, automated and secure.
