Lauren has used her time at Deloitte so far to make an impact and help others with their careers. From her work with the One Million Futures initiative to becoming a member of the North West Business Leaders Council, she’s doing good and giving back wherever she goes.
What attracted you to Deloitte?
Deloitte are a truly global organisation, that are famous for supporting clients across all industries and sectors. Why wouldn’t I want to join that? I saw a job opening in my city and knew instantly I had to apply.
How did you find the application process?
For me, the process was easy to navigate, and the HR team were excellent at answering all my questions and keeping me informed throughout. My final interview was definitely one to remember. I was living in Sydney at the time and did my first Skype call with the partner responsible for the team I was applying for. By using technology, Deloitte were able to hold my interview even when I was on the other side of the world. I knew then that Deloitte were a tech savvy and dynamic organisation, and as a millennial it was love at first sight.
What surprised you most about working here?
Before I joined, I thought everyone would be similar in terms of their personalities, their backgrounds and their work. But when I started, that preconception vanished instantly. There are so many different people from all walks of life collaborating on projects. My peers have a variety of education and professional backgrounds – I even found someone who has an Arts based degree too.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? You mentioned about the One Million Futures, can you tell us more?
I lead a relationship with a local high school here in Manchester, under the One Million Futures CSR strategy. I’m also a member of the North West Business Leaders Council, where I’m collaborating with many of our clients to promote social mobility and a fairer society.
I started to volunteer at Deloitte because I felt a genuine connection with the students we engage and talk with. I come from a similar background, from qualifying for free school meals, to being a part of a single parent family - I’m also the first generation to go to university. Throughout all my academic years and my time so far at Deloitte, I’ve had mentors/positive role models. I am a firm believer that if we receive positive encouragement and guidance from someone who’s genuinely invested in us, our confidence will soar. There are no limits to what we can achieve. I want to be that person for someone.
How do you explain your job to your family and friends?
My job is all about making connections; internally across our vast business and with our clients, as well as within our community. I also support and enable colleagues to build sustainable and distinctive client relationships. The people I meet every day make my job amazing. I have so many colleagues that are experts in their fields, which means I can connect the dots of people with ideas.
