Tom’s career opportunities literally fell into his lap. He discovered Deloitte’s schemes and never looked back. Now, he’s working from the Leeds office on some of the biggest clients we have. We spoke to him about his journey and how he’s found working within the Leeds team.
What attracted you to Deloitte in the first place?
It’s funny, and a little cliché, but the opportunity literally dropped into my lap. My mum was reading a magazine, and a leaflet dropped out. I knew I wanted to be involved in finance, but I was never sure what to do. The scheme seemed perfect; it gave me the opportunity to see if I enjoyed the professional services environment without committing to a full-time role. After university, I ended up doing exactly that, and I now work in the Deloitte Leeds office.
What do you like the most about working in the Leeds team?
It’s definitely unique in the coverage they have. Because we’re a regional office, we deal with large multinational clients that have their headquarters in the region, but also we work with the smaller family owned single entity companies. Because we don’t have another Deloitte office in proximity, we cover a large geographical area. We’ve also won Yorkshire Tax Team of the Year for the last 2 years. If you like winning awards, we’re the office to join.
What was the thing that worried you the most about working here?
I was worried it would be extremely corporate and very hierarchical. I couldn’t have been more wrong. There is such a friendly atmosphere among everyone here that makes you feel motivated to work harder. You never feel worried to ask anyone a question, even if they aren’t even on that project.
Is there any advice you’d give for fellow applicants for the scheme?
My biggest tip is definitely to look at the impact Deloitte have on the area you’re applying to. People have a tendency to get bogged down in what each service line does, which is still important, but you should definitely be looking at the wider work they do. There are so many annual reports to choose from, such as the Crane Survey, or the Football Money League. It just shows interest in Deloitte as a company, not just a service line.
With such a technical job, how do you even begin to explain it to your family and friends?
Once you get to the bottom of it, it’s quite simple. We help solve company’s corporate tax issues. This can include tax compliance process, calculating the corporate tax liability that is due or even specific advice that the client has requested. This could cover a vast range of issues they are facing. In a nutshell, the advice we give each client is tailored to their circumstance and challenges, so no two days are the same.
Apart from perceptions, what is the biggest challenge you face in your role?
I think it’s that we have to be highly technical for our clients. They expect the best, and the tax legislation is always changing, so we need to keep on-top of it. Deloitte have regular training sessions and courses that help us all to keep up to date.
What’s been your team’s proudest moment?
For me, it’s the little things. When a client thanks us or is grateful for all the help. They’re always so appreciative of the quality and the speed of our work, and that’s what makes me proud.
What’s the last thing you read that got you really fired up about your industry?
For me it’s just the lack of awareness as a whole, compared to one specific thing. People seem to assume we just help people to pay no tax and that’s it. It couldn’t be further from the truth. We support clients with their tax issues and make sure that they pay the correct amount at the correct time.
Do you believe Deloitte fosters an inclusive environment?
Definitely. The range of backgrounds people have at Deloitte are extremely varied and everyone is encouraged to bring their own skills to the table.
Lastly, how do you think you’ve grown since joining Deloitte? Not just professionally, but personally too?
I’ve seen a massive increase in my confidence since joining. Clients come to me directly for advice and it is something that I am able to help with. Knowing that I’m able to support clients after just a few years has greatly helped my confidence.
