The BrightStart Scheme helped Ella kick-start her career as a Consultant in our Tax team. It’s not long since she finished her A-Levels but she’s already a key member of our team.
How did you join Deloitte?
I applied online to Deloitte’s BrightStart Scheme and joined straight after my A-Levels in August 2013.
What are you responsible for in your role?
I work on providing corporate tax compliance, transfer pricing and advisory services to a high-profile portfolio of both UK and multinational clients, ranging in size and industries. I’m in a team that works for Associate Directors, Directors and Partners, and also support and develop junior members of my team.
What’s a typical day like for you?
No two days are the same, but you can guarantee you’ll have to deal with emails, calls and meetings each day – both internally and with our clients. As I’ve progressed in my career, I’ve been placed in a managerial role where I am the leader and act as the first point of contact for some of my clients. I also review the work prepared by junior members of the team and manage the efficiency and profitability of these engagements. I often liaise with overseas internal teams and other tax specialist teams to help deliver a coordinated approach and ensure we meet all clients' deadlines.
What is your most memorable moment on the job so far?
I was temporarily transferred to a large technology client for about two months, working on Regent Street. I then also worked on a large HMRC enquiry, which was interesting as I got to know the client’s business really well and attend meetings with HMRC, the client and their lawyers.
What’s the best part of your job and in what ways is your team innovative?
The best part of my job is getting to work with lots of great people to produce work which our clients are really grateful for. An added perk is that we have a “Tech Foundry” in the Reading office where we get to play around with some of the latest tech equipment such as 3D printers and virtual reality headsets.
Why would you recommend Deloitte to someone?
We have talented people that will become lifelong friends in no time, but we also do very interesting work. There are lots of extra-curricular activities, from team dinners to sports teams to charity days.
How are you supported to work flexibly?
I work full-time but sometimes work from home, or I’ll do additional hours during the week so that I can leave a little earlier on a Friday.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy cooking and spending time with family and friends. I also like getting involved in sport and play for Deloitte in the local touch rugby league.
