From number crunching to hosting events and organising weddings, Khadeeja is loving life as an Indirect Tax Analyst in London.
When did you join Deloitte and what is your role within the company?
I joined the graduate programme as an Indirect Tax Analyst in 2017, specialising in VAT. Now, in my second year, I advise clients in different sectors on a whole range of indirect tax issues. I’m fortunate enough to work on an amazing mix of clients spanning large auto manufacturers to small local businesses and some of the UK’s biggest housing providers.
What made you pursue a career in your field?
I entered a competition at University and got the opportunity to speak to the Head of Recruitment at Deloitte and they encouraged me to apply for their Summer Vacation Scheme. I took their advice and secured an Indirect Tax internship in summer 2016.
I absolutely loved it and was offered a graduate role after finishing my final year. And now two years on… I’m still here.
What do you like best about working for Deloitte?
I enjoy the agile working environment. I live a fair distance away from the office, so it’s great to be able to work from home occasionally when I need to. Being trusted to manage my own time and work away from the office, makes life better for everyone.
There’s a lot to love about my role. Indirect Tax has given me real responsibility across a great breadth of client work since day one.
What are your biggest achievements during the time with us?
One of my proudest moments has to be hosting the two-day National Indirect Tax Conference, with 250 attendees from all over the UK and Europe. I thoroughly enjoyed being given such a big responsibility and rose to the opportunity during my first year at Deloitte.
Passing every ACA exam I have sat so far is a big achievement too, as this included six certificate level exams and three professional level exams.
I have to mention that in my personal life I planned and organised a family wedding for 300 people. This involved arranging the venue, logistics, food, theme and clothes. Flexible working really helped with this.
What drives you? How does your creativity help you overcome challenges at work?
What motivates me is the independence and freedom I’m given to take responsibility for my work. The comprehensive feedback I receive on my work helps me learn and grow. And of course, the encouragement from friends and family and the satisfaction of nailing an exam.
