Oliver

We speak to Oliver Tilley, Director in Corporate and International Tax, on what makes tax such a rewarding place to develop your career  and why it’s even better in Reading, Berkshire. Here’s his story.

How and when did you join Deloitte?

I started my career in tax as a graduate with another ‘Big 4’ accountancy firm before moving to Deloitte. I realised Deloitte have a much bigger presence in the Thames Valley area and more ambitious growth plans than other firms. I felt that Deloitte would be able to offer me more interesting and challenging opportunities to accelerate my career path.

Why did you join Deloitte in Reading?

I’m happy I joined Deloitte in Reading because we advise some of the largest, most prestigious clients in the world. We also have a fantastic team of really smart, driven people, and a supportive, entrepreneurial culture where everyone’s encouraged to be bold, creative, and ambitious. Three reasons why someone should join us in tax? Because the work is really exciting and challenging. Because you can become an indispensable advisor to your clients. Because we have a really supportive team culture. And because we have fun. OK, that’s four reasons.

What’s your role at Deloitte?

I lead a team who win and develop relationships with large international groups. We support and advise on international tax issues through transitions such as acquisition, disposal, business restructure and political change. I enable my team to keep our clients happy, progress in their careers and become brilliant advisors and leaders of tomorrow. I work full time but sometimes from home, and use flexible hours if I want to come in late occasionally! High performance is not simply about ‘clocking in’ at 9. At Deloitte, you’re trusted to work in a way that’s best for your team and your clients.

How does your business area work with other departments in Deloitte?

Deloitte is a powerful and diverse firm which offers a huge range of expertise and services. So, when our clients are dealing with challenges, it’s rare we can only help in one area. Businesses face tax issues whenever they face change and so we, as tax advisors, get to be first at the table. By understanding our clients’ businesses and priorities, we draw on the power of the global Deloitte network to solve complex issues.

What could a job in tax at Deloitte do for your career?

You’ll enjoy getting stuck into advising the biggest and best clients from day one, on all sorts of complex and exciting projects. You’re also encouraged to be entrepreneurial, try new things and build relationships – supported by a large, brilliant team. You can develop into a strong tax specialist and advisor quickly. There are no limits on how far you can go.

Which clients do you work with?

Reading tax has a large, impressive portfolio, including some of the largest global corporate groups, including Fortune 500, FTSE and international private equity portfolio groups.

What do you think is the main barrier to joining tax in Deloitte?

I think ambitious tax professionals have two misconceptions about joining Deloitte tax in Reading. Firstly, that the work isn’t as exciting as in London, and secondly, that tax is all about filling in tax forms. They’re both completely untrue. From Reading, we work with some of the world’s biggest and most prestigious businesses, because we’re recognised for our expertise and insight. Almost every challenge, issue or opportunity has tax considerations – and so we give insightful and proactive advice to help clients navigate risk, complexity and business-critical decisions. Tax rules are always changing, all over the world, and clients need strong tax advisors who can help them respond. What’s been the most interesting change in tax recently?

Brexit is going to be both a major challenge and opportunity for our clients. As international tax advisors, we’re very used to law change and well placed to advise on the vast array of issues Brexit will impact on. We’ll succeed by doing what we always do: listening to our clients, understanding their priorities, and using innovative and collaborative thinking to find solutions.

There’s more to Reading that you might think. Once you join us in Tax, the world really is your oyster. Curious? Explore more at: Deloitte Careers UK.
