Cricket Change starts herev1

On Friday 15th July 2016, in collaboration with the Edgbaston Foundation, the Midlands practice of Deloitte co-hosted our third Community Cricket Event, an initiative now into its second year, and which seeks to encourage and promote social inclusion in Birmingham through a shared love of sport.

It took place on the outfield at Edgbaston Stadium, on which few are ever allowed to step, with over 80 students from ten schools across Greater Birmingham coming together to play a five-hour tournament.

The children are mixed in to eight-a-side teams, allowing each of them to introduce themselves to fellow participants from different social, economic and cultural backgrounds, creating new friendships and levels of understanding and awareness.

They then compete in a variety of matches throughout the day with coaches from the Edgbaston Foundation umpiring matches, as well as leading practise sessions during the morning.

These events live long in the memory of those involved, years after the dust has settled on the planning documents and meeting agendas. I believe it is of the utmost importance that we continue the momentum that we have built for these events along with our on-going wider relationships with the schools involved.

As people and as a firm we can only be judged on our legacy and having been involved in two years of this event I can honestly say that I see it make a difference, opening horizons and possibilities.

The children had the opportunity to play cricket in a world famous stadium and it gave our staff the opportunity to volunteer and assist with the running of an event experiencing something that has a real and lasting impact.
